Driving directions: Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Mile 31.5 on the George Price Highway, about halfway between Belize City and Belmopan City. We have a large road sign posted on the highway at our access road entrance off the George Price Highway.

From the Philip Goldson International Airport: Exit the parking lot and airport facility. At the end of the one-mile airport access road, turn left onto the Northern Highway. Follow this two-lane paved road about 5 miles until you reach the junction marked Burrel Boom Road, left turn only. Follow the Burrel Boom Road about 3 miles to cross the Belize River, then another 9 miles to a roundabout junction at the George Price Highway, go right onto the George Price Highway. Continue on the George Price Highway for 15 miles, past the Belize Zoo at Mile 29, then another 2 ½ miles to Monkey Bay, left side of George Price Highway just past Cheers Restaurant. Take care to signal traffic behind you that you are turning left, and not signaling them to pass you! Note that it is common practice in Belize to pull off the road onto the right shoulder allowing traffic to pass before turning left. Turn left onto the gravel road at the Monkey Bay road sign, and continue ¼ mile up the gravel road. See our Service Entrance sign on the left where you can pull in and park. Walk to the two-story wooden Field Station building in front of you where we will greet you by the office, and begin orientation and check in.

From San Ignacio and Belmopan: Travel east on the George Price Highway towards Belmopan and Belize City. From the Belmopan Junction at Guanacaste Park, continue east another 14 miles on the George Price Highway toward Belize City. Just past Amigo’s Restaurant and Bar on your right, begin slowing and signal to turn right at the sign for Monkey Bay. Continue approximately ¼ mile up the gravel road. See our Service Entrance sign on the left where you can park. Walk to the two-story wooden Field Station building in front of you where we will greet you by the office, and begin orientation and check in.

Public Bus directions from Belize City: Catch any westbound bus, (except the “Express”) which will be labeled for Benque, Belmopan, Dangriga, Punta Gorda, or Placencia. Make sure that the bus is not marked “non-stop”. Tell the conductor to drop you off at Monkey Bay. Your upcoming landmarks will be the Belize Zoo (2 miles prior), the Midway service station (1 ½ miles prior), and Cheers Restaurant (¼ mile prior). Once you step off the bus, walk 5 minutes up the gravel road to our entrance sign on the left. Drop your pack at the two-story field station where we will greet you and begin orientation and check in.

  • Please see the Entry Requirements page on our website.

  • Travel Insurance is highly recommended. You can view, compare and purchase travel insurance at SquareMouth.

  • For all visitors, there is an exit fee when departing Belize. When departing via the International Airport, this airport departure tax may be included in your airfare. It is worth checking to see whether it has already been paid along with your airfare. If not, it is payable in cash at the International Airport. The total exit fee is US $55.50. There is also a $0.75 security fee for domestic security screening. When departing Belize through the Guatemala or Mexico border, the border fee to be paid on departure is US $20.00.

  • The climate of Belize is sub-tropical. Typically, we experience “dry season” conditions from December to May. Although usually warm and dry, the infrequent “northerly” can blow down from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing with it cooler temperatures and rain. Inland conditions can change quickly with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rainfall commonly occurring. Typically, daytime temperatures range from 70 - 100° F with high humidity, dropping at night to 70 - 80°F or cooler at higher altitudes. From June through November, the rainy season ensues with both sunny and wet weather conditions alternating. Rainy season corresponds with the Hurricane Season, also a great time to visit Belize because there are not so many tourists competing for services.
