Conservation Projects

Fire Management

We are proud members of the Maya Forest Corridor Fire Working Group, actively contributing to wildfire management in the region. Our work includes community and organizational training, wildfire monitoring and prevention, prescribed burns, and response efforts in the areas surrounding the sanctuary.

Parrot Nest Box Program

The savannah habitat at Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is part of a prime habitat area for the endemic Yellow-headed Parrot subspecies, Amazona oratrix belizensis. Our nest box program provides artificial nesting cavities to support the species during its breeding season while monitoring chick health, safety, and fledgling success. Students and visitors can participate in this conservation program by helping to build, install, and monitor nest boxes throughout the sanctuary.

Camera Trap Biomonitoring

Our camera trap biomonitoring program helps us document and monitor wildlife across the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. Strategically placed cameras capture wildlife activity with minimal disturbance, providing valuable information on species presence, distribution, and habitat use. This data supports conservation planning, wildlife management, and long-term monitoring of the area’s biodiversity.

Community Outreach

Our environmental education and community outreach programs connect our buffering communities communities, schools, and youth with the natural environment. Through educational activities, workshops, summer camps, and community events, we promote greater awareness and appreciation of Belize’s wildlife and ecosystems while encouraging people to take an active role in conservation.
